Ömer Yurtseven made it to where every young basketball player dreams of reaching: the NBA. And not just any team, but one of the most iconic, the Miami Heat.

Now, that alone would be a lifetime achievement for any athlete, but Ömer is not just any athlete. He is a gladiator who, even after achieving what seems impossible, chose to go further. His goal was to contribute to sustainability and help eliminate plastic from the ocean. He wanted to find a way to connect a problem like marine pollution with something as inspiring as sport.

That’s how, in 2023, he created Swish for Change, a platform that recovers discarded, broken, and abandoned fishing nets from the ocean and restores them into basketball nets.

This initiative turned Ömer into a “storydoer”: someone whose actions inspire and create real change. And that is why today, Ömer Yurtseven and Swish for Change are part of The Ocean Connections, the first community of leaders taking action for the oceans.
